I didn’t know Bob the Angry Flower was still going!

This is the best BTAF cartoon ever because it’s the best and simplest critique of Ayn Rand ever:

Heh, well the entire philosophy behind the Fediverse has a “do it yourself” bent. I’m sure “we” could work things out before it all goes to shit.

“Whudda bout this and whudda bout that?” Come on, man. Is it really that important to get me on something? I was enjoying a comic. Good day.

Ah, my apologies, I wasn’t looking to “get you on something”, just start a conversation on the practicalities of self-sufficiency.

No wonder you capitalist simps think we all die without capitalism, one of the more common themes I pick up from you lot is treating “growing crops” like some dark eldritch magic lost to the void eons ago never to be retrieved.

              you capitalist simps

Er, OK… maybe take a few deep breaths and relax a bit? We don’t have to immediately take up extreme opposing positions.

Farming is one of the oldest things that humans know how to do, and probably the reason that the first civilizations came into existence. It’s not magic, and it’s certainly not lost, but it has become heavily industrialized to the point where most people (in the US) don’t have to do any farming and have no experience with it. Even fewer people have appropriate land for farming and the necessary tools to do the work, and in practice no one who grows food on a small scale is completely self-sufficient. Doing all of it yourself is incredibly complicated and requires a lot of equipment and a lot of trial-and-error.

If we lost our current industrialized mass farming and distribution system (for whatever reason) a lot of people would die before small farming communities managed to stabilize themselves.

This is true. Growing a few crops for yourself is relatively easy. Try some potatoes or mint. Seriously, mint is so easy to grow you can’t plant it in the ground. It will take over, because it’s a weed.

However growing crops for billions of people is an entire industry. Farmers don’t pay more than a Lamborghini for a tractor because they think it’s cool. You need a ton of resources to farm acres of land.

I used to enjoy Bob the Angry Flower a lot more when it was a comic about him doing stuff. Now he just says (yells) stuff.
