Personally I’m way happier with a 401(k) than a pension. Risk is more distributed with a pension, yes, and many people don’t have the knowledge or resolve to properly manage their own retirement funds. But pensions are a royal PITA, way more complicated (and expensive) to manage than a 401k. So if I had to choose between money coming out of my paycheck to go into a complicated expensive pension fund that may or may not be around in a few decades, OR a 401k that I have complete control over and can take with me when I leave the company, I’ll take the 401k every day of the week.

Yeah it’s really unfortunate and messed up that that is literally the only recourse the workers have. And usually it’s out of the frying pan right into the fire because all companies fucking suck. Corporate culture is so toxic.

Hopefully they get caught in the “is this guy a lunatic” phase of the interview process. If they are functional and otherwise normal and reasonable then who cares if they’ve got an eight ball in their pocket.

Related story: my ex worked at a vet clinic for a while. She said they hired a new vet tech and he got fired on day one. He’d stolen some animal tranquilizers or something and disappeared. They found him passed out in his car drooling. Called the cops/ambulance and fired him on the spot obviously.

Wealth is the result of an equitable transaction that gave both parties value. So yes it is very much the goal, in any economic system.

It brings me great pleasure to own things for a long time. My car is 15 years old and it’s in amazing condition, my phone is 6 years old and it’s fine. Hell, I have several pairs of shoes that are 6-8 years old and I can’t believe they’re still going strong. When it’s time for something new I’ll happily upgrade but I’ll never understand people who constantly need new things all the time.

I switched to iced coffee years ago for precisely this reason and never looked back. I’d rather have watered down coffee than sit there for half an hour waiting for it to cool. I have an ice tray for big cubes that don’t melt as fast, so I freeze coffee in them. That way I don’t water down my coffee at home and it’s perfect.

I blame the board of directors and shareholders. The ceo is hired by the board the make money for the shareholders. I think shareholders need to realize their ROI is lower than they think it is, because of the externalities that are not reflected in balance sheets and income statements. But of course that’ll never happen until something calamitous causes it to.

I agree there should be more tax brackets at higher rates and income levels. It’s weird the personal tax rate maxes out at 37% for income around half a mil, ish. I regularly see my clients making a million, $10m, $50m+. It is hard to see that knowing we deny children lunches in school.
