  • I read it was Pokémon like and wrote it off. I’ve tried to but never enjoyed Pokémon. I grew up on jrpg’s so you’d think that was right up my alley. But I disgress…

The comments here paint a more complex story. It honestly still doesn’t seem like my type of game, but my curiosity is piqued. I’ll check it out.

  • I get that it’s probably a joke. But I would absolutely go out of my way to get small bills to buy basic grilled sandwiches from this person complete with, what I assume, is barely hospitable service.

I feel like that’s kind of a hipster thing? I don’t care for the label, but I can’t argue it sometimes fits.

  • I would think long and hard about spending years in a foreign country. While admittedly I haven’t done so myself, I’ve traveled to some of the kinds of countries you’re thinking of and talked to and observed expats in those places and it seems awfully lonely. There’s a cultural and, I assume, language barriers that’ll make you feel like an outsider. You may find a community of others like yourself, but still you’re likely to struggle to make meaningful relationships. Sure, working for the man sucks. But I’d argue crushing loneliness might be worse.

Of course I’m applying my wants/needs and my experiences to your situation. Maybe that’s not a concern for you. Maybe it’ll be the best thing you ever did. But it warrants consideration. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Also something to be mindful of is in some countries foreign individuals can’t own land.

  • Oh I wouldn’t say I’m a beginner. I’ve been scripting and coding for… 20 something years. I’m just not very skilled. Stuff I write tends to be simple and small, so all I really want from my editor is auto indenting and syntax highlighting.

I think if I was trying to manage a larger project I might find use in an IDE, though perhaps it is more of a crutch.

  • sudo is “super user do”. The equivalent of Run as Administrator in Windows for whatever command suffixes it. Ideally you don’t want to use this unless you have to, but it might take some time to learn where that line is.

What they’re talking about is a gui based software installer. I assume it runs the dnf or apt or whatever commands for you.

  • So you’re brand new to Linux and you’re already hacking away at something you don’t understand well. Good for you! That’s how you learn 😊.

That being said, getting (as you’re learning) and keeping software running in wine can be frustrating. I’d suggest using an open source alternative if possible. Hopefully the one others recommended is a good fit for you. And a bonus, one less piece of proprietary software you rely on, which imo is always a good feeling.

Good luck, and welcome to Linux!
