  • It’s a shame that I’m a quivering pussy, because I think the combat against the replicants in FEAR fucking rules. The shooting feels awesome, slow-mo karate is awesome, the game feels awesome to play.

…and then the game goes quiet after the shooting stops, and it delivers some of the spookiest atmosphere I’ve experienced even after two decades of age. A single light fixture moves suddenly, showing the shadow of something just behind me, and I jump out of my skin and have to take a break from playing.

  • What’s preventing me, a private user, from just creating my own web browser? it’s a program like any other that just needs to be able to access each websites’ server and display its files right? You can’t tell me that nobody else has ever wanted to make their own alternative, so why do we never hear about them?

  • Humans can have more complex emotions. We can be stressed about theoretical concepts that animals just are not equipped to understand. We can be excited by the prospect of future events.

Most animal emotions are immediate. They enjoy some food they eat, they find a nice warm spot to bask in, they see a predator and run away. Most animals lack the mental capacity to think beyond the immediate.

Most Americans don’t realize that the U.S. is by far the easiest developed country to immigrate to, by a country mile. It’s still an incredibly difficult feat, but our standards are really, really low. For most developed countries, you’ll need to have a specialized, useful education, a significant amount of capital on-hand, a clean bill of health, and you’ll need to learn a new language.

My “plan” for a Trump election is to try and get a student visa to complete my PhD in neuroscience, and then I’ll overstay and escape to the European wilderness as an illegal immigrant. I wouldn’t hold my breath for a promise of asylum.

  • The genocide started way, way before October 6th. October 6th was a reaction to increased aggression from Israeli settlers who had massively increased the amount of land they were stealing. The difference is that it was more subtle, so nobody cared, but if you forcibly remove everyone from their homeland it’s still genocide.

Obviously I’m glad Americans are waking up to the realization that Israel is an apartheid state, but it’s been true for decades. The fact that Biden has always been a Zionist was a huge red flag, but he was “the only person who could beat Trump” and now we’re stuck here.

  • The Sims 2 Castaway is basically the proto survival crafting game. It’s kinda cool to see the classic Sim stats get used in such a different way. I sometimes wish EA would return to those days of selling spinoff Sim games like Castaway and the Urbz, rather than just dumping every single new idea they get into one game as DLC.

  • There certainly was a “golden age of gaming,” where the cost for a studio to exist and make a game was pretty low and they were more willing to experiment. The thing people forget is that there was so, so, so much trash and shovelware made during that era as well. We remember the incredible game that innovated and drove the medium forward, and we forget the movie tie-ins and genre knockoffs.

These days, AAA has forgotten how to innovate, and nearly all of it is being driven by indie titles. This is because, once again, the cost to develop is now so low that literally anyone can do it. The amount of trash and shovelware we’re getting is almost ludicrous though, so it’s a lot harder to find the great titles that are overlooked, but extremely high quality has a remarkable way of cutting through the noise.

  • Helldivers 2 is pretty fun when it works, but the game is racking up technical debt at an alarming rate. There’s been several updates and balance changes focused around fire damage, except the fire damage over time effect only works for the player hosting the game, and that bug has been in place for months. There’s still tons of matchmaking bugs and crashes, such that you sometimes spend 15 minutes just trying to actually play the game. Arrowhead is aware of these technical issues, but has mentioned that they cannot fix them because pushing new content is a higher internal priority than maintenace, and their team is too small to effectively do both.

Honestly I wouldn’t just avoid it, but I’d avoid any Sony published multiplayer title in general moving forward. It seems a lot of them end up in this situation where the game prioritizes adding more monetized content to the detriment of anything else.

  • Look I love Dark Souls; it is an incredibly flawed game, and Demon’s Souls is even moreso. Dark Souls was so far ahead of it’s time that it still needed time to bake in the oven. Then with how claustrophobic DS2 and DS3’s worlds were by comparison, I don’t think FromSoft really surpassed Skyrim until Elden Ring.

Both games are some of the greatest of all time though, so a lot of it will just come to preference. I think a lotta Dark Souls players have been spoiled by the remaster though, the original release struggled hard under the weight of Miyazaki’s ambition.
