Eh it’s fine, everyone on the internet likes to take the opportunity to correct an argument that they think is wrong, even if just on a technicality. I don’t think the author of this piece needed to focus so much on the numerical comparison with billionaires either. If anything, they could have focused more on the historical compensation of writers to make a more compelling argument. Maybe try to find book sales and compensation from the past few centuries and see how they compare.

The point of the article is that writers and authors are seemingly less valued than they ever have been. One reason for this is probably the change in media consumption habits which renders writers mere employees and underlings in the film and television industries (along with everywhere else). People no longer read books, which are the main format by which writers can become self-employed and self sufficient.

As always, it comes back to the homogenizing aspect of capitalism which tends to absorb everything into an interconnected web of economic dependencies. Instead of small businesses, we have overarching retail behemoths like Walmart and Amazon. Similarly, instead of a multitude of independent writers and authors expressing their own thoughts in books, they are compelled to work in teams to construct artificial, corporatized narratives due to economic necessity, yielding film franchises and television series along with all of their advertising and merchandising income.

Yeah I noticed that article too. Not quite as vile, to be fair. But any kind of milk contamination is still a nightmare scenario.

Thank you for taking the time to break down these numbers. That CDC report is extremely misleading and this is not the first time I’ve seen someone attempt to break down the numbers. But you’ve done an especially good job of explaining it.

The underlying assumption on your part being that no one could genuinely want you to reconsider your position, or indeed that your position could be even slightly flawed. Think about what you’re saying, “Sealioning is when people politely ask me questions to clarify a position that I took”. So?

Because a tattoo is created by a tattoo artist, a skilled worker who is paid (relatively) well. A tattoo is unique and cannot be duplicated or resold.

A T-shirt and coffee mug are manufactured in a sweatshop by a multinational corporation, and have no inherent value beyond the value of the IP itself.

It’s the difference between having a personal appreciation for Watterson’s comics, and exploiting their value to sell useless junk. Do you honestly think Watterson would be upset about a long time fan getting a tattoo of Calvin? I highly doubt it.

A tattoo is not an example of commodification at all. It’s a piece of artwork, not a mass-produced plushie toy.

Wow that was a fascinating rabbit hole. I think she was probably legit, but the fact that nobody else has broken 120 years is somewhat perplexing. The big gap between her and second place is statistically very unlikely, but there is also a lot of positive evidence mentioned in that article that’s hard to refute.
