I used to think following the news would help me be prepared. It mostly has not.
The problem with the news is that generally it’s not actionable information.
Don’t forget that framing things in ways that maximizes emotional response (fear, anger) increases views, which increases ad views, and directly contributes to their bottom line. They have direct incentive to increase anxiety and worry, so everything is couched in scary hypotheticals of varying often undisclosed amounts of credibility.
Use publicly-funded news-sources
dw.com (germany) swissinfo.ch (switzerland) and bbc.com (you already know that one)
This is the primary reason I stopped consumimg news that doesn’t directly relate to my interests. Eliminating news and advertisement from my life is the most liberating thing I’ve evr done.
Occasionally I check the news, maybe once per month or two, just to see if the world is still on fire.
Most of the time it is. Fair enough I guess.
I used to think following the news would help me be prepared. It mostly has not.
Yeah. Once the CDC helped me prepare for Zombies, I realized I could relax about the news.
May 16th 2011… Pretty sure this is an April fools joke, and like everything in government it was a month and a half late.
Yeah. It’s a joke publicity stunt.
But it’s also useful - the preparations given for zombie apocalypse are actually pragmatic preparations that can help during severe weather, supply chain disruption, pandemic, etc.
I like to share the zombie article, in particular, because, while it’s silly, the advice in it is reasonable and useful to almost anyone.
Little less news and a little more memes and you’ll be alright. For 4 years anyway.
A little less news consumption, a little more dank memes, please
All this aggravation’s from propaganda machines
A little more chill, a little less fear
A little more weed, a little less beer
Close the news and open lofi girl and you’ll be less unhappy.

Using lemmy Sync enacted multiple word filters for headers and damage control, should have done this a few months back.
Fuck censorship.
Thank you.
Yes let’s all bury our heads in the sand now. I’m sure it will all turn out fine 🫣
some of us may need a few days between the cries of “dont vote for harris, teach them a lesson” and “now is the time to join us in revolutionary action”. theres some lack of credibility going around this platform and the corporate media sources (news & social) are doing their best to maintain ad engagement. we are all staring down a decade of painfull experiances and it’s ok to take a breath sometimes.
Pretty sure the intention is more to distance oneself from depressing information about an event that has occurred, not about something which can be interfered upon.
I.E. Hearing/consuming constant news about election results when one vehemently opposes the result can very easily lead to anxiety (shown in the comic) and depression, both of which can be damaging to one’s mental and physical health.
There’s little we can do about it now. The damage is done. Destroying our mental health with worry helps no one.
Best reply to this, hands down.
Got to keep the heart rate up!
Unplug for awhile…before we’re all unplugged!!!
In before the people that get irrationally angry about the censored word.
I consider myself rationally angry about it!
Username checks out
In after someone gets irrationally angry about people getting irrationally angry.
That makes me so angry!
My eyes aren’t what they used to be and the image is small on my phone screen so I just thought it said “shiiiiiiiit”. Went back and took a look after reading your comment and realized it was a blurred out portion. Yikes. Just brains doing brain stuff and filling in the blanks the way they see fit I guess.
My brain did the same. Now I’m like “wel sh…t!”
its called doomscrolling for a reason
