Is it worth watching on a big screen while knowing next to nothing about the source material? (I downloaded the epub. 1000+ pages. Yep, that’s gonna take a while)

I enjoyed Oppenheimer more in my computer chair and computer monitor vs the big screen and boring chair. Plus at home I can freely pause and get snacks.

Knowing anything about source material just seems to irritate people.

Watching it as a standalone film, it’s just some big flashy set pieces, and too many bad things happening to dogs for no good reason.

…too many bad things happening to dogs for no good reason.

The movie is full of dramatic and moving scenes, but that final little tail wag was the only bit that got the waterworks from me.

I opted to watch the 70mm version because it is the one experience you cannot get at home. I recommend doing so.

PS: Literally nobody is talking about it but John Leguizamo deserves praise. He had a major role and I didn’t even know he was in the movie until he showed up.

I have loved Leguizamo since ‘house of buggin’" from back in the 90’s… you are right to give a nod to his performance.

John Wick opened my eyes. Leguizamo has really shown off his ability to subtly add to scenes. He is consistently one of the most impressive actors in movies he has a role and stands out despite the screen time he has.

I saw it in IMAX, and I honestly don’t think it would have mattered to me if I’d seen it in a regular theater. It still feels like an event that would be missing something if I’d seen it at home first, but it was lacking any real visual spectacle. It’s a well-made film, but there were no blockbuster holy shit eyecandy moments.

That’s one of two major gripes I have with the movie.

My second gripe is entirely to do with a pretty egregious diversion from the source material, specifically with Athena. Zendaya is great, but Athena is supposed to wear a helmet. That’s her whole look. Having a helmetless Athena is like if they’d given the cyclops two eyes.

So your lack of knowledge about the source material won’t work against you, and seeing it on a small screen should be fine if that’s what you’re into.

If you were thinking about it I recommend Imax, but it leaves Imax after this Thursday. Most movies only get a few weeks in Imax before the next new movie takes its place. It was really good and the experience was worth going out for. I loved Oppenheimer as well, but seeing it at home was definitely ok for that one.
