How does airdrop works? Can you not, keep it off and only activate it when you actually need it? I’ve never in my life wanted to receive a random file from a random anonymous stranger in public (grindr not withstanding).
It used to be that you could leave airdrop on for everyone at all times.
Then China wanted to crack down on dissidents so Apple changed it to “Everyone… but one for 15 minutes”. Apparently it then made it’s way to ALL iPhones so now you can’t have any airdrop fun anymore.
Because I liked playing the random meme airdrop game. 99% of the time being in the receiving end.
On a more serious note, it allows people to freely transfer information between each other in a method that can’t be controlled by a firewall / government / etc.

Maybe people keep it on just in case a grindr opportunity pops up in the wild

That doesn’t sound like fun it sounds like massive privacy violation and surveillance tool.
That’s why I asked. If it can be turned off, why wouldn’t you?
