There was an immense effort to rectify the issue, same with the ozone crisis. Cant say the same for current issues, most news has to both-sides everything and there are much more (or atleast more prominent) contrarians like the anti-vaxers. Never again will we see a unified front against a global issue because someone will always benifit personally if failure is on the table.

It was overhyped but for the wrong reasons; very simply said it was like converting systems to use 64bit instead of 32 so they could handle the bigger numbers we were gonna need.

Y2K also didn’t really result in anything because it was a fixable problem that got acted upon. Most of us would have been in school around that time too.

Also don’t really see the problem with 9/11, surely the vast majority of people wouldn’t have been involved in any way or known anyone who was? Of course its a bigger issue for those that were, but it seems odd to stick it in as a generational experience. I didn’t even hear about it until a day or two later when it happened to be on the news before school.

I changed jobs in late 99, so I got to go through all the Y2K bullshit in one job, then do it again in the new one.

One dude at my old job had his panties in a bunch because he said all the U.S. Navy ships were vulnerable and he said WW3 was going to start, but he was generally an idiot anyway, so that was par for the course.

In the new job I had to certify that DEC impact printers were Y2K certified. Which way basically me putting stickers on all of them saying they were certified because they weren’t smart enough to care what the date was.

My boss at the new job required us to be onsite on January 1st, which was kind of a drag, but that’s the way it goes. There was nothing for us to do. He stopped at a deli on the way in and picked up an absolutely fantastic pile of food for us, so it just became a casual brunch and we just kind of hung around eating and chatting until he was satisfied that nothing was going to go wrong.

I’d kill to know what the deli was. I was too young and stupid to save the name.

Y2K was a nightmare for us GenX. Months of overtime and late nights with lots of contractors coding 24/7. I hope I never have to go through that again.

Even as a teenager I was pretty crystal-clear on the fact that anybody who knew anything about how a computer worked also knew that Y2K was not the cataclysmic society-ending event that the fucking braindead news media were making it out to be at the time.

I remember in '99 the radio DJs loved talking about how there was a chance the world would end on new years, so there was a degree of anxiety, especially to dumb kids like myself

So much this. It boggles my mind that I was considered an “essential worker” and had to work every single day of the COVID shutdown when everyone else was staying home and social distancing. But I never got a raise or a bonus. I’m treated like dogshit stuck to my boss’s shoe. Collectively Millennials are the current backbone of the United States workforce and we are expected to keep society running but we are treated like shit and are paid a fraction of what our boomer parents were making at our current age.

Don’t forget we’re hated by baby boomers, Gen X, Gen Z and younger.

There was constant reports about how disastrous it was going to be if it wasn’t fixed. That puts some strain on people. I remember thinking that it didn’t matter what I did for a job if everything collapses.

I still remember the hype about it, and wondering if something would actually happen. I was 12 and sleeping over at my friends house on NYE. We were all a bit excited to see what midnight would bring.

Yep, things looked positive for a short while after the end of the cold war and the Internet became widespread when we entered the workforce. The advancement of the human race only seemed a matter of time.

But our Boomer parents weren’t willing to let anyone else have a bright future, keeping us away from any real power while driving exploitation of nature and people to the max to fill their bank accounts. If you look at the US, this is thill the case, with a gerontocratic political caste that fights tooth and claw to prevent the next generations from enacting change - somewhat like fucking elder vampires.

'88 here. 9/11 sits at such a clear demarcation line for us. Happened in 8th grade where you’re still straddling the fence that’s childhood, while still capable of grasping the enormity of what was unfolding.

Though I also grew up in the rust belt, so there was always the sense that you were riding a wave that had long since crested.
